Stewardship is for All; Help us Ensure Access
Written by Ami Kane,Chief Development Officer
As you have no doubt heard, the Guild is planning a one-of-a-kind 30th anniversary celebration coming up in September in Freeport, Maine. We are thrilled to bring together stewards from places far and wide, not only to celebrate 30 years, but also to explore the “future of forest stewardship” in community, together. Across three days, we will bring together practitioners, scientists, landowners, and community leaders for immersive field trips, working sessions, and meaningful conversations rooted in ecological integrity.
One of the principles we commit to at the Guild is that responsible management inherently involves continuous learning. Research repeatedly shows, teams, movements, and learning are most effective when diverse viewpoints and rigorous discussion is welcomed. We know that the experience will be richer if we ensure that it is as accessible as possible, for all. That’s why we have kicked off a new Accessibility Fund for stewards who need financial assistance. Applications are open now through July 31st and members can nominate themselves or others for full or partial fee waivers.
When I joined the staff last August, I was drawn by programming like Women Owning Woodlands, the focus on workforce development, and deep partnerships with indigenous stewards. Our Accessibility Fund is another effort in this spirit of inclusion. Low and no-cost registrations ensure we include a diversity of stewards, and we ultimately facilitate strong cross-national learning and connections.
I am proud to personally support this effort, and I am hopeful you will too—by making a contribution, nominating a steward who should be with us at this event, or both! Nothing can make the case for the fund better than some of the applications we already have received. As one applicant shared:
As a newly minted consulting forester, I will be actively using new information as I work with clients and build my professional portfolio. The new community connections will help me to better engage with our shared community of professionals.
We can be a support system for this forester, together; that’s why we’ve set a goal to raise $10,000 by August 15th so we can say yes to every request to the fund. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing more updates from applicants and details about the event as they unfold. (Keep an eye out for a challenge match coming soon!)
If you’re considering joining us in Freeport in September, I am hopeful you will join us and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there. If you have any questions in the meantime, you can email me at ami@forestguild.org to check in with the Guild staff person you know best.
Thank you for your support!
