Cultivando Conservación

Program Description:

The Forest Stewards Guild and Asekia Inc. have partnered on Cultivando Conservación, a program designed to connect northern New Mexican landowners with networking and funding opportunities that support conservation practices in four rural northern New Mexican communities (hubs) and surrounding areas, including Cuba, Grants, Cebolla, and Las Trampas.

Cultivando Conservación is designed to increase awareness and participation in USDA NRCS and other conservation programs, while also strengthening the capacity of communities and local organizations to adopt and promote natural resource conservation practices generally.

The program builds strength in local communities by investing in the development of a community conservation ambassador network. Local individuals from each hub work with landowners, arrange community-led conservation projects, oversee microgrant projects, and host outreach events, education sessions, and hands-on trainings.

Cultivando Conservación also invests in youth workforce development through the reestablishment of the Forest Stewards Youth Corps (FSYC) in Cuba, New Mexico. FSYC invites youth ages 16–25 to reconnect with their ancestral landscapes, build practical skills, and prepare for careers in forestry, agriculture, and related land stewardship fields.
