FSA Reflections: Southwest Virginia – Number 8

January 8, 2026

Lately,   I’ve  really enjoyed working on crop tree release projects with the  crew. This  is where   we select  trees   that  we want to promote  growth,  and others we want to cull.  We’ve  all been working on our winter tree identification skills, which takes a lot of practice. Between the three of us we can usually  come up with  a positive identification. We all have different trees we are more confident with and  various ways  of  identifying  them. Throughout the day we all repeat the phrase  “Hey  what  kind of  tree do you think this one is?”  It’s  an enjoyable practice we are working on together.
