FSA Reflections: Southwest Virginia – Number 7
Written by Walker Trent
We recently attended TREX which is a hands-on prescribed fire training event. The base camp was located at Table Rock State Park, near the town of Pickens, South Caroli
na.
We attended three days of hands-on training/ presentations and discussions. The leaders were all experts in their field and shared knowledge that was particularly valuable to that location. On the final two days, we split into teams and went to different locations for prescribed burns.
This was my first experience on a burn and was a little intimidating at first. I used a fire torch, patrolled the line, went on the interior of the fire, and helped mop up. I was instantly surprised by the amount of smoke and learned some ways to deal with that. It also quickly became evident from the amount of physical fitness this job required; carrying a backpack, equipment and walking on rough terrain. I didn't know anyone on my team, everyone was very helpful, patient, and inclusive. Therewere people from all over the country with different levels of skill. I could tell everyone there had a passion for fire and enjoyed the day. On the second day we burned into the night, and I was able to see flames in the forest, a sight I won't forget.
Overall, it was a great experience, learning the aspects of a controlled burn and being part of a team. Although I was only there for a few days, I felt like I was part of a new community.
